Message from the Executive Director
Dennis Hulings

Welcome!
The Student Cooperative Association, founded in 1933 and incorporated in 1960 as a
Pennsylvania not for profit corporation, plays a key role in the education and extra
curricular life of the university community. The mission of the Association is to provide
facilities, activities, and services to enhance the social, cultural, recreational, and
learning experience of the university.
Throughout the years, the Association has provided financial and other support for
extra curricular activities, operated recreational and service facilities, and operated
the campus bookstore (The Co-op Store). The facilities owned and operated by the Student
Co-op include the Hadley Union Building complex and a 270 acre Co-op Recreational Park. In
addition, a Student Union Building was constructed for the IUP Punxsutawney Campus and a
Student Center has been developed at the IUP Armstrong County Campus.
The Student Co-op seeks active involvement from students and faculty on campus. In
1972, the Association amended its charter to give the members of the Association a far
greater role in establishing policies and in making major decisions. In 1979, the Charter
and Bylaws were again revised to give students a majority on the Board of Directors and
every committee and to give the Board a more active role in setting and revising policies.
From small beginnings, the Student Cooperative Association has grown to meet the
growing needs and interests of the campus community. The student activities budget has
grown to the point where over $3,000,000 is allocated for a variety of organizations on
campus annually.
If you would like to know more about the Student Co-op, please stop and visit. I or one
of the friendly staff members will be glad to answer your questions.
Sincerely,
Dennis Hulings, Executive Director
