5th Meeting of the Fourth
Student Government Association
October 20, 2008
8:15 pm
Susquehanna Room
The meeting was called to order at 8:23pm
A meeting agenda was available to all members
There was a motion to approve the minutes, it was seconded and passed.
President’s Report- Jessica Carson
a) Any Sophomore or Junior with a 2.5 GPA is eligible to be nominated by IUP to possibly be elected onto the State Board of Education
b) The University Senate Awards Committee is seeking nominations for the Distinguished Faculty Awards. If you know an outstanding professor, you can nominate them
c) We encourage every SGA member to wear a green button to inform others about violence against women.
d) Jessica was the only student present at the last Indiana Borough meeting.
e) ‘Speak Up IUP’ is a forum for students to come in and talk about complaints/concerns. There will hopefully be a panel there and the tentative date for this is Nov. 3rd.
f) There was a move to cancel our SGA meeting on November 3rd for this event. The motion was seconded and passed.
g) There was a move to spend between $75 and $125 on beverages for the event. The primary debate after the move was made to bring up to the members that we do need drinks. The secondary debate was made in order to state that Aramark may not be the best route, and that we should look to other sources. There was a move to close the debate that was seconded and passed.
h) There was move to refer the donation drives to the OR committee. It was seconded and passed
i) The next Senate meeting is on Nov. 4th at 3:30 in Eberly Auditorium
j) If anyone wishes to contact Jess during the week, she will be gone starting Wednesday for her first Board of Governor’s Meeting
Vice-President’s Report- Josh Moss
a) If you were suspended, talk to Ray and explain why you weren’t at the meetings. He will take your appeals into account and decide whether or not to reinstate your membership.
b) The website is being maintained by the vice-president and the Public Relations Committee. If you are interested in helping, email Kierstin Bolton.
Rules Chair- Ray Edwards
a) If you were suspended and you gave Ray an excuse, you are now reinstated as a member into SGA given the approval of the minutes. If you did not give Ray an excuse, you are still suspended and you need to make an appeal to Ray in order to be considered for reinstatement.
b) Last Wednesday, three constitutions were approved and there is another meeting this Tuesday at 7:30pm in the HUB near the big screen.
c) There were some members who went to the PSAN meeting. They really would like our input and they want to hear from students about concerns on campus. There are many opportunities to do this, such as the Pre-Six O’clock forum with Dr. Atwater and the Speak Up IUP event.
Secretary- Sarah Hogue
a) The minutes will be emailed by Tuesday night.
Treasurer- Mike Stutzman
a) As of two weeks ago on the 7th the budget was $12,957. The budget is now at $10,476.20. We have used approximately $2500 thus far.
Advisor- Sam Mucken
a) Kate Linder was not able to make the meeting tonight and Sam was present as our advisor for the meeting.
Elections Chair- The Elections Chair is not filled at the moment. If anyone is interested, email Josh.
Outreach Chair- Jessica Carson fro Alyssa Stiles who could not make the meeting
a) A survey was sent out about 2 weeks ago to the presidents of each recognized student organization. The survey showed some negativity towards Student Government Association. To allow different organizations to get to know us a little better, senators can attend different organizations' meetings as a representative of the SGA, and that can count as their office hour.
b) Student Organizations Forum--Date set for Wednesday, November 5 at 7pm because of issues reserving the Ohio Room. Most likely from 7 to 10pm, and there may be a few guest speakers
Public Relations- Kierstin Bolton
a) Students are seeing SGA announcements. Kierstin is going to try to put an advertisement in The Penn, on IUP radio and television. Email Kierstin if you are interested in helping.
University Relations-Amber Grady
a) Amber bought chalk on October 21st for $9.72.
b) She talked to Danielle Botelho, World AIDS week is Dec. 1-5. Anyone who wants to sign up to sit at a booth for SGA is welcome to. They will be handing out condoms, maybe female ones also. Email Amber if you are interested in representing SGA.
c) There is an art contest on Wednesday of that week, along with a speaker on Thursday, and a blood drive on Friday.
Student Trustee- Chad Buckwalter
a) There will be a quick public meeting to approve an honorary doctorate in the Sutton Trustee Boardroom
b) We have to recommend a student to take over the Student Trustee position for when Chad graduates by March 3rd to the Board of Governors. It is a great opportunity to see how the administration really works.
Senate Vice-Chair- Steve was not present for the meeting
Good of the Order Announcements
a) Chad won his fantasy football game by .4.
b) Family weekend is this weekend
c) Craig’s next wrestling match is on Saturday at 7pm at Harmony High School
d) Be an IUP Peer Advisor for Summer Orientation 2009. There is free room and board and a $2200 stipend. The job is from May 2009- July 2009. There will be informational meeting about it this coming Monday at 1pm, Tuesday at 6:30 pm, and Thursday at 1pm. The meetings are located in 214 Pratt Hall.
e) Ray met with Eugene Matta, who is the head of the Pittsburgh Historical Landmark Foundation, which is funded under a grant from the Getty Foundation. The committee is trying to help IUP renovate itself. The university would like to hear from students about issues with buildings on campus.
f) Jess is speaking at this year’s commencement.
g) There is a Halloween party in the Ohio Room from 7-11 on Halloween. There will be Art/Fashion Design people to help judge the costumes.
A move to adjourn was seconded and passed.
